George Jones, country superstar, has died at 81

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - George Jones, the peerless, hard-living country singer who recorded dozens of hits about good times and regrets and peaked with the heartbreaking classic "He Stopped Loving Her Today," has died.



He was 81.



Publicist Kirt Webster says Jones died Friday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville after being hospitalized with fever and irregular blood pressure.



Known for his clenched, precise baritone, Jones had No. 1 songs in five separate decades, 1950s to 1990s, and was idolized not just by fellow country singers, but by Frank Sinatra, Pete Townshend, Elvis Costello, James Taylor and countless others.



In a career that lasted more than 50 years, "Possum" recorded more than 150 albums and became the champion and symbol of traditional country music, a well-lined link to his hero, Hank Williams.

Allan Arbus, the actor best known for his role as psychiatrist Maj. Sidney Freedman on the long-running television series "M*A*S*H," died on Friday in Los Angeles. He was 95.



His daughter, Amy Arbus, confirmed the news to The New York Times.



Arbus' most recent television work was as Uncle Nathan on the HBO series "Curb Your Enthusiasm," in 2000. His credits at IMDb.com list appearances in numerous TV series over the years, from "Taxi" to "Wonder Woman" to "Matlock" and many more.



His film credits include roles in "Coffy," "Crossroads," and "Damien: Omen II."

Arbus was born in New York City on Feb. 15, 1918. He was an Army photographer in the 1940s and along with his wife, the famed photographer Diane Arbus (née Nemerov), started a photographic business in New York in 1946.



The business broke apart 10 years later as Diane Arbus pursued her own photography. The couple divorced in 1969 and she committed suicide in 1971.



Arbus appeared in just a dozen episodes of "M*A*S*H," but endeared himself to fans with the ability of his character (Dr. Freedman) to match wits with Capt. Hawkeye Pierce (Alan Alda).

It would seem that I make certain people uncomfortable around here. It would seem that my reading of journals and perusing of portfolios and profiles makes certain people nervous and defensive. Sufficiently enough to leave rather vulgar comments when they rate me the same thing for the umpteenth time, not realizing that it makes no more difference to me now than it did the first 900 times they did it. That they actually think that they can tell me what to do here.

Jonathan Winters, groundbreaking comic who influenced generations, dead at 87



LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Comedian Jonathan Winters, whose breakneck improvisations inspired Robin Williams, Jim Carrey and many others, has died at age 87.



Longtime family friend Joe Petro III says the Ohio native died Thursday evening at his Montecito, Calif., home of natural causes.



Winters was a master of improvisational comedy, with a grab bag of eccentric personalities and facial expressions. Characters such as the dirty old lady Maude Frickert were based on people Winters knew growing up in Ohio.



In the mid-1950s, "The Jonathan Winters Show" pioneered the then-new videotape technology on to do stunts such as showing up as two characters on screen together.



He was introduced to millions of new fans in 1981 as the son of Williams' goofball alien in the final season of ABC's "Mork and Mindy."
